These are challenging times for small family farms. With no national strategy for food, every farmer wanting to produce high quality food from well cared-for animals has to face a decades long culture of driving down prices and quality through highly processed, supermarket sold products. We can’t compete for price, but we can for health, taste and kindness to our animals. You can taste the difference.
Our award winning milk gets its incredible flavour and its high levels of Omega-3 from the fact that our cows live out in the fields most of the year, as weather allows. In the wettest days of winter the cows come into the barn and feed on the hay and silage from our own farm and others around us who farm with the same care. We manage the farm on organic principles, with no artificial fertilisers or pesticides used anywhere on the farm – good for the taste and health of the milk, and better for wildlife.
Unlike much industrialised dairy, our milk is not highly processed: it’s not homogenised and comes whole or semi skimmed. We milk and pasteurise each morning, and the milk is on its way to customers by afternoon.
Because of the increasing economic challenges of running a small farm, we’re looking to change our offer of just a milk round, and either will be processing some of our milk into other dairy products – ice cream, butter or yoghurts perhaps? Or adding to our offer on the doorstep deliveries. We’ll keep our site posted as we develop and explore ideas..
